Trail Users

Please observe the rules of the road, and remember that you are responsible
for your own safety.

Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing and footwear considering your outdoor activity and weather conditions. It is also very important to ensure you have an adequate supply of water or favorite beverage (alcohol is prohibited), and snacks to allow you to complete your visit comfortably.

West Virginia law requires youth ages 14 and under to wear a helmet while biking. Regardless of age, wearing a helmet is highly advisable as the potential for head injuries is greatly increased if the rider is involved in an accident. Headphones and other non-essential items are discouraged as they compromise safety for everyone on the trail.

There are also some right-of-way rules you should note. Bikers must yield to hikers, and both bikers and hikers must yield to horseback riders and horse driven trollies and wagons. This is very important, as some sections of the trail (Cairo to Ellenboro), may experience high volumes of usage at any time of the year.

Please follow manufacturer's and or rental shop's safety recommendations for bicycles, helmets and any equipment or proper technique required for your specific activity and interest.

Leave No Trace.
Pack It In, Pack It Out!

Let's Rest a While!

When you're on the trail, there is nothing like a good spot to rest and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere that defines the North Bend Rail Trail. One of the best of these is the Turner Gazebo just east of Tunnel No. 13.

Offering a beautiful view of Bonds Creek, this dedicated rest area is a tribute to West Virginia State Police Lt. Matt Turner, killed in a helicopter crash in 1996. Turner's widow Linda provided the materials, and many of his co-workers pitched in to build this structure that exemplifies the appreciation and love this man had for the trail.

As with nearly all successful recreational trails, the common theme is that they, by and large, are nurtured and supported by those who enjoy them and realize the benefits for local communities and the excitement they bring to new visitors.

We thank Matt and Linda Turner and friends for their selfless contribution, and we want others to know, that it is truly folks like these that make our trail a very special place.

The Turner gazebo is not the only rest area made possible by the generosity of trail users.

Rest Areas Completed!

The North Bend Rail to Trail Foundation and the staff of the North Bend State Park have been working on the construction of three rest areas along the trail. Each rest area features a picnic shelter and will eventually include a pit toilet, water source, fire pit, bike rack and hitching post.

These rest areas are located at Petroleum, eastern end of the West Union tunnel and just east of Salem.
