At Salem, all services are available and
there is easy and quick access to U.S. Rt. 50. The Salem Depot Pavilion
trailhead is the most substantial and integrated community effort to date
along the trail. Restoring the authentic look and feel of the railroad era,
this is a combination museum, stage, and park area where you can picnic and
enjoy yet another aspect of the trail in this quiet college town that dates
back to 1780.
In fact, you can actually see what life
was like in 1780 at Fort New Salem, just north of the trail at Salem
International University. Re-enactors, craftsman and artists recreate the
frontier life and demonstrate the folkways handed down over the generations.
Salem is also host to an Annual Apple Butter Festival that has been
celebrating the fall harvest for 17 years.
As you make your way toward Bristol, you
will come upon the Matthey Rest Area. The land was graciously donated to the
trail in another example of goodwill and commitment to make it better for
everyone. Not far from there, is the 1086-foot Tunnel No. 2. A couple of
miles north of Bridge 14 (built in 1899), crossing Marshville Road, is one of the few
remaining covered bridges in the state. Two more miles will bring you to the
Eastern Terminus at Wolf Summit. The highest elevation on the old Grafton to
Parkersburg rail-line at 1136 feet.
Clarksburg is a city rich in ethnic
heritage and civil war history, and
host's one of the 'Top 100' festivals in the nation with the West
Virginia Italian Heritage Festival. The West
Virginia Blackberry Festival held here, is also
growing
larger every year! The birthplace of legendary General Stonewall Jackson, a
life-size
statue of 'Jack' and his horse can be seen downtown in front
of the county courthouse. There are also several excellent examples of
19th Century architecture
here, including the Waldo building and Victorian homes
of extravagant style.
All services are available here, including
the state's largest shopping area
at Eastpointe and Newpointe Plaza. MeadowBrook Mall, just a few miles north,
is linked to North Bend by the American Discovery Trail which crosses the
historic Simpson Creek covered bridge (built in 1881), just below the mall
entrance.
The Harrison County Rail Trail is
accessible off 20th Street in North Clarksburg and continues the ADT.
The city was a major railroad hub at one time, and currently there is the
hope that we may be able to extend the trail into town in the next few years
and create a trail hub utilizing several grades in the immediate area.
The City of Clarksburg
has expressed interest in and unveiled a proposal to link the
NBRT to the Veteran’s Memorial Park complex. We need the support of
businesses, organizations and trail users in making this a reality. Please
contact us!
