Foundation News

WV Governor Bob Wise presented a check to the North Bend Rail Trail Foundation in November 2001, representing an $80,000 grant funded by the Transportation Enhancement Act of the 21st century.
"It came down to vision, local effort and commitment, and the commitment is clearly, clearly here," Wise said. The money will be used to negotiate the purchase of five miles of trail between Wolf Summit and Clarksburg.

On the Parkersburg end, Corridor D and associated highway projects are rapidly coming together, which will allow the Little Kanawha Connector trail to make its crucial link. Trailhead highway directional and interpretive signage is also top priorities for the foundation. Many exciting developments are on the horizon for our region and the trail, and we need your support in continuing to strive toward making North Bend Rail Trail the premiere trail of West Virginia.

Tourism and NBRT

Island Creek is known for its excellent fishing opportunities.

Smithburg is the site of Spencer Park and the restored Smithton Depot. Camping is permitted here. Four miles eastward will bring you to the 846-foot Long Run Tunnel (No.4). There is a sizable ‘black pond’ wetland near here also. It is another seven miles to Salem and the next available services.

The last few years have produced the biggest improvements to the trail since it’s initial development over the last decade. In that regard, we hope to see a renewed interest in small business development along the trail. Just like businesses that ‘live or die’ in conjunction with highway development, the same is true with business and well maintained and promoted recreational trails.

Ten years of visitor testimony from ‘around the world’, has demonstrated an ample opportunity to take advantage of the growing demand for outdoor recreation. Our intent has always been to create an enjoyable, interesting and diverse trail experience that benefit’s the local community, as well as the guest.

Never before has the trail been in a better position for continued growth, and meeting the standard expectations of travelers that are fulfilling the projected
demand for recreational trails in the 21st century!

We are definitely entering a new era that will include the developing Hughes River watershed project, with a surrounding trail system. Connecting to downtown Parkersburg and Clarksburg will allow us to fully realize a regional destination attraction of substantial economic consideration.

If you are an individual interested in a trail related business venture, or an organization working on complimentary recreation or tourism based pursuits, contact us!

Happy Trails!
