On the way along the trail you will travel by Central Station, the name implying its railroad relation. Here or about, occurred the last recorded armed train robbery in the nation in 1936. Just two miles from here, is the 2297-foot West Union Tunnel (No.6) built in 1868, the longest and most daring by far. This is the true North Bend experience. Riding or walking through these tunnels is a unique challenge to the senses that is hard to describe. Their sheer size and presence humble us on our journey. They are just cool, literally! But be careful, this tunnel especially, is very long and dark and has on-going drainage problems that can make it treacherous at times. Please use proper lighting and common sense when on bicycles and horses. The reward at the end of the tunnel is the West Union Rest Area. After you’ve relaxed here for a while, the next stop is town and all services. The Doddridge County Courthouse and Museum are on the hill in the middle of town. Both unique buildings, the courthouse built in the late 1870s is almost castle like, while the museum is in the old county jail. Heading out of town on a model section, you will cross Middle Island Creek on the trail’s longest bridge at 175 feet.
Technically a river, Middle Island Creek is known for its excellent fishing opportunities. Smithburg is the site of Spencer Park and the restored Smithton Depot. Camping is permitted here. Four miles eastward will bring you to the 846-foot Long Run Tunnel (No.4). There is a sizable ‘black pond’ wetland near here also. It is another seven miles to Salem and the next available services.
